A Brief History
Triumph Engineering was founded in 1902, when the first Triumph motorcycle was produced and called “No.1” with a 2.2hp Minerva engine.
Shortly after the outbreak of WW1 Triumph were commissioned to supply the 499cc Type H ‘Trusty’ motorcycle to the Allied forces, and over 57,000 were made to support this effort, with over 30,000 seeing ‘active service’.
Again Triumph were used to supply the military with over 50,000 bikes during WW2, and with the bombing of the Coventry factory in 1940 production was moved to a new plant firstly in Warwick and then to Meridan in 1942.
Post-war, Triumph continued to lead the industry in terms of performance with the Tiger 100 which was piloted by Eric Lyons to a maiden win in the 1946 Manx GP, the Speed Twin, and the 3T models, and indeed held the motorcycle land speed record for 15 years with Jonny Allen reaching 193mph in 1955 on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA. These successes lead to the iconic T120 Bonneville 650 being produced in 1959
These truly were the days of dominance for Triumph and many were featured in many new films of the 50’s and 60’s, with Marlon Brando sporting a 650cc Thunderbird 6T in “The Wild One’, and later, Steve McQueen with the iconic TR6 650 in ‘The Great Escape’.
